Boardwalk

One of the unique habitats that visitors can enjoy Holton Lee is the reed beds in Lychett Bay. This area has been used for centuries as a source of reeds for local thatched cottages and is also a vital habitat for many nesting birds including the Reed Warbler. The marshy nature of this environment has meant there has been limited access to this landscape. To increase access for all to this habitat, Holton Lee has wanted to create easy level access to this environment with minimal impact to this delicate ecosystem.

The boardwalk project has been an ambition of Holton Lee for a number of years and is finally coming to fruition with the construction starting in the snowy days at the end of February 2009. It has been made possible by the kind support and donations of the Montague Thompson Coon Charitable Trust and Natural England. We hope to be finished by the end of spring enabling guests and visitors to access a small island in the middle of the reed beds. This will create new opportunities to see the abundant wildlife in an area that has not been available for public access until now.
