Woodland
Holton Lee contains a variety of woodland situated on varying ground conditions. The principle areas of established woodland are found at Holton Clump, Holly Coppice and North of Gateway Cottage. The latter being one of the few places on site where hazel coppice is still present.
Holly coppice is characterised by oak, birch and holly with alder in the lower lying wetter zones. Holton Clump is the highest point of the site and reaches down to the edge of the reedbed. It comprises a mixture of mainly oak, ash, willow and birch, with blackthorn, hawthorn and elder forming the scrub layer. Additionally there is an old area of withy bed a wet area in which willows grow. Traditionally these would have been used for basket making.
Management aims to maintain the variety of tree age, remove invasive species such as rhododendron and also reduce deer damage. We are currently creating new areas of hazel and coppice so that the whips can be used for art and environmental work.
