Using traditional green woodworking techniques, this workshop will cover the step by step techniques and processes involved in making your very own shrink pot from a small trunk or branch of green wood. After the wood has been hollowed out, a seasoned piece of shaped wood is inserted into the bottom. Over a couple of weeks, the green wood shrinks around this to give it an airtight seal. A top is also fashioned from the same greenwood to give you a traditional wooden jar in which you can store anything from nuts to pencils. Shrink pots originate in Scandinavia where the Vikings used them to carry provisions on their long sea journeys. They are also found in Romania and other countries in the world. They are great fun to make!

15 Days in Clay
This exciting project was originally set up to give small groups of adults with learning difficulties, and disabled adults in the Poole and Dorset area, the opportunity to be taught ceramics to an advanced level enabling learners to develop as artists in their own right.
The project aims to inspire and nurture the creative development of individuals in a professional ceramic environment. It has provided new opportunities for self-expression, confidence building and personal growth through the accessible medium of clay. Free taster sessions are offered at the start of the project to make sure this is something each individual wishes to access.
The quality of the work produced is of the highest standard enabling individuals to exhibit and to sell their work around the country. All students go through a process of assessment, with the possibility of accreditation.
15 Days in Clay take place three days a week in the Pottery Pavilion at Holton Lee
For more details contact Janna Edwards on 07980 563899 or visit the 15 Days in Clay website http://www.15daysinclay.co.uk

Out There Project
This service for disabled adults aims to provide opportunities for environmental discovery and to bring people closer to wildlife and the natural world. It is also about using that contact with nature as a source of inspiration for activities that are fun, creative and educational. You can visit Holton Lee for the day and in the morning use scientific equipment to get closer to wildlife. We have digital microscopes to view miniature worlds and special cameras that can film animals secretly at night. You can visit the bird hides and use our binoculars and telescopes or follow the wheelchair trail through a variety of habitats. Capture insects and bugs and find out more about their bizarre life cycles. In the afternoon, under the guidance of your tutor, work in artists’ studios or create artworks outside in the grounds using your morning’s environmental work as inspiration.
Out There workshops provide positive benefits to mental and physical health through simply being in quiet green spaces, carrying out satisfying creative activities and shaking off the stresses and strains of life through gaining contact with nature.
Your place or mine?
We can bring the Out There ‘eco creative road show’ to reveal new worlds on your doorstep, in your garden, local park, pond or nature reserve. Follow that up with a special art workshop that celebrates the magic and beauty of your local wildlife.
The Out There project is flexible and responsive and workshops can be planned with you, your organisation or group to meet your needs and interests, and to provide an experience that is satisfying, memorable and fun. We can provide half or full day workshops or residential wildlife breaks throughout the year.
